The anamorphic fungus Cryptostroma corticale was first isolated from sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marshall) logs in 1889 in Canada. Afterwards, the following record of the fungus was already in Europe on sycamore (A. pseudoplatanus), hickories (Carya spp.) and basswoods (Tilia spp.) as well as in North America on maple (Acer sp.).
